Let's Find Out What Former German President Christian Wulff is Doing to Help Söring's Media Campaign
Openness and transparency are the best way to ensure balance. Let's create some.
First, a brief update: I have sent an email to Dr. Ralph Guise-Rübe, Chairman of the Hannover Legal Studies Society, expressing my concern at the prospect of Jens Söring launching his customary attacks on the American criminal justice system — with no objective moderation or contrary perspective — in a speech sponsored by a German university and held in an actual German courtroom. As always, I have not called for the speech to be cancelled, only for the audience to be presented with a alternative — and fact-based — perspective. I have offered to travel at my own expense and participate for free, as always. I will let you know whether and how he responds.
Now to the second theme of this post. Both on my former blog and on this one, appeals by me to readers for information have been productive. I’ve cultivated many sources and gotten invaluable tips and insights from my readership, for which I’m thankful. Now it’s time to look at Christian Wulff, who was the Federal President of Germany from 2010 to 2012, when he resigned because of the so-called “Wulff Affair”, which revolved around him allegedly taking advantage of his office. Wullff resigned the office, citing a lack of trust, but was later cleared of the charges by a court.
Wulff became aware of Söring’s case sometime before 2017 and decided to become one of his prominent supporters — perhaps the most prominent. Wulff even flew to Virginia in 2017 to plead for Söring’s release before the Virginia Parole Board: “We are totally convinced of his innocence”, Wulff said (g), accompanied by Peter Wittig, the then-German ambassador.
Of course, in 2017, there was no counter-natrrative to Jens Söring’s misleading claims, and his American supports — who have now all gone silent — were trumpeting his innocence at every opportunity. We can therefore forgive Wulff for trusting Söring’s biased “Media Pack” and believing in his innocence back then. But surely Wulff, as a lawyer, would be interested in the details of the case and would subject Team Söring’s statements to careful, independent analysis. Surely he would have at least skimmed the Wright Report or Nebelkerzen (g) or read my FAZ-articles, including the January 2020 article (g) which changed thousands of minds about Jens Söring’s innocence claims. A million people have listened to the podcast “Das System Söring” — is Wulff one of them?
It’s impossible to say, of course, because as far as I can tell, Wulff hasn’t made any public statements about the case since Söring’s return. Does he still believe Söring is innocent? Why? Has he ever wondered why Söring has adamantly refused the DNA testing proposed by American journalists? It would be interesting to find out, wouldn’t it?
In any event, Wulff has met Söring at least once since Söring’s return — we know this because Söring posted about it on social media. I have also heard rumors that President Wulff is helping Söring’s media campaign behind the scenes. One potential indication of this is that Wulff is speaking before the same legal society which is hosting Söring’s 13 December speech — the Hannover Legal Studies Society — on 14 February 2023, on the subject of “Love and Hate — Thoughts on Democracy” (g). This strikes me as potentially more than a coincidence. Did someone from the Society contact Wulff, and then Wulff said: Hey, you should invite Jens Söring?” Did Wulff say “I’ll be happy to give a speech, but I want you to invote my friend Jens to speak also?”
This is an important question. Wulff is a former President of Germany — a man who still collects €236,000 per year (g) of our tax Euros as an “honorary salary” even after leaving office. He is also a prominent lawyer. If he is using his influence and connections to help Jens Söring’s media campaign, he should come out into the open about it. He should be honest and forthright, and say: “I continue to believe Söring is innocent and I am happy to help him build his career by using my influence, prestige, and the free time I have thanks to my guaranteed government salary.” That would be fair dinkum, as the Aussies say. My interest is in transparency, not how Wulff chooses to spend his time.
Maybe Söring and Wulff are just friends, and Wulff hasn’t done anything to further Söring’s media career. In that case, also fair dinkum, as the Aussies say. I have no wish to interfere with a beautiful friendship.
But if the former Federal President of Germany is working the phones and emails on behalf of unrepentant murderer, we deserve to know. Therefore I’d like to ask everyone reading this if they might know something that sheds light on this issue. Have you heard Wulff talk about Söring’s media campaign? Have you been contacted by Wulff (or someone close to him) on Söring’s behalf? Has Söring said or written anything which indicates that Wulff is more than a friend and is in fact helping Söring to get media and speaking appearances?
As always, any information you provide will be handled in the strictest confidence. I’ve already learned an enormous amount from my readers, and I’m confident this time will be no exception. Also, President Wulff, if you’re reading this, feel free to reach out to me. I’m just interested in gathering information about a relevant public issue, not in causing any mischief. Perhaps you’d care to issue a press release explaining what you’re doing to help Söring’s media campaign. In that case fine: transparency achieved, case closed. Think about it!

Was denn nun Herr Söring?
