No mention of taking the envelope to post in DC.

Why lie about that if he had taken it?

Because it was irrelevant. There were no fingerprints on it, and the postmark system at the time made it impossible to determine where it was initially delivered into the postal system -- mail from all over the area could have been postmarked in D.C.

Simply put, because of how the mail operated at the time, there was no way to determine *exactly* when or where the envelope was put in the mail. There was no evidence Söring knew about or had anything to do with the envelope.

The prosecution looked into it and certainly would have highlighted the issue if it implicated Söring, but it didn't, so they rightly ignored it.

Ehhh: Andrew it isn't irrelevant. You should talk to Richard and Dr. Howard Haysom instead of just chewing the story of irrelevant while the investigation is not giving any further substance. Relevant is the point of time. On Saturday they both had been expected to pick up this letter which was postmarked on Monday after the killings. There are testimonies which had confirmed this matter, which led to the firm theory for both brothers that Elizabeth was in the house during the killings. There is no indication that Lizzy had been in the house between Derek's birthday and the date of the killings to pick it up. The theory that Soering also had picked up this letter is not the most logical theory but a must for all single killer theory pros. Unfortunately Soering didn't sing about the letter in his so called confessions.
