"What kind of an asshole confronts four grieving brothers who just lost their parents through a horrific murder

At last after forty years Derek and Nancy Haysom have been brought to life.
I was surprised to learn that they were cremated so quickly. Presumably before the Coroner's results came back?
My parents being so quickly cremated came as an awful shock. Had they been buried, my mother could have been exhumed and almost certainly JS's DNA would have been found under her fingernails. Case closed. Christine Kim may well have been involved in an unwitting way, I leave that to your deductions.
Both my parents' wills made Elizabeth the main beneficiary. All assets were to guarantee her the highest education level at whichever institution she desired and to support her to a quality living standard up until the age of 30 as I recall. Obviously, the courts overruled her as a beneficiary upon her implication in the crime.
Richard Haysom describes, near the end of this first section of his remarkable memoir 4:44, being shocked, seeing, as he was sitting Indian style on the floor of the 'Bronze Belle' driving back to Charlottesville and finding himself unexpectedly offered a beer by Jens Soering, that Soering had bad scratches and bruises on his left forearm. Soering's arm had been until then hidden by a poncho that Soering had been wearing, once quite oddly in the dining room of what I thought was the Radisson Hotel. Wh
ere there was a scene suggesting to me that Soering came close to attacking Howard Haysom at breakfast. As if he were on a hair-trigger.
But what happened to all this information? Were the Bedford authorities told about this? This is not hearsay . Why have we not heard this before?
In hindsight, the Bedford authorities clearly missed the opportunity to thoroughly investigate all possible available evidence by speaking to all family members. During the funeral period only Elizabeth and Julian were extensively interrogated. JS was not on their radar and basically Elizabeth wasn't either. It seemed certain at the time that "Sophia" was going to be charged. Consequently at that time I saw no significance in the injuries I saw on JS. It was only till they both fled approx 4 months later that those injuries became significant by which time I presumed they would have healed. I was back in Canada, and I had learned that at least one other person (I believe local) had witnessed the injuries at the Memorial service. That person was available to the authorities. In addition JS showed the British authorities a scar when he confessed and said it had occurred during the crime. The Bedford authorities didn't pursue with any further evidence gathering because they presumed (erroneously) since he confessed while incarcerated in England that he would plead guilty when he was finally extradited back to the US four years later. JS backtracked on his confessions and he or his representative challenged the evidence authenticity of the individual that saw his injuries at the Memorial. I did write a letter I can't remember exactly when, confirming the injuries I had seen. It may have been his first parole hearing and it's possible I might have a copy of that letter. No one ever called me to question me about it.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply to my question. I think the time is right for your gut-wrenching, deeply personal account of what happened to you and to your family. I think you have a brilliant and important work- in- progress. To translate what I am trying to say into modern demotic English, I am like fucking overjoyed that you are doing this, bro.
Appreciate it, and it was a difficult decision to make. I found writing in the style I chose was the least emotional for me. There was a catharsis in the blunt truthfulness.
I have written the first draft of Part 2. It covers their flight, capture and up until Elizabeth's sentencing. Now that I have established my style I expect it proceed much quicker than Part 1, which believe it or not I rewrote 5 times!
I'm looking very forward to part 2! And yes, you established you style. It's definitely a very unique prosa style, which involves the reader as an observer of happenings who was there in 1985! As a reader, I could feel that writing this book is a part of healing for you. I really appreciate it.
This is my first time commenting here, and I think I’m actually someone who, despite having read a lot about the case, has not formed a final opinion on whether JS did it or not. Yes, it’s true — JS would have had major advantages if they had turned themselves in in Stuttgart — but what is so far-fetched about the argument that they simply wanted to keep fleeing? Believing that maybe they wouldn’t be caught after all? In hindsight, it would clearly have been much better to turn themselves in in Stuttgart — but perhaps the two of them hoped they would never be caught at all and would never have to go to prison.
To be on the run is much better than staying in jail, for sure. Aside from that Söring thinks that he is more intelligent than others (police, investigators). His arrogance causes him to make mistakes.
Brilliant breakdown of the Stuttgart inconsistency. That logical gap is pretty glaring when laid out plainly like this. I've seen similar patterns in other high profile cases where the revisionist narrative just doesnt align with documented behavior at the time. The "young and in love" excuse gets weaker every time it has to cover anothr hole in the story.
How does Soering explain those scars? I am not convinced he did it, Elizabeth seems like the better bet. I just cannot believe that such a nerd type of human could do such a slaughterfest. The a priori probability of such is so small…. But I also think Soering has not positively proven his innocence. He could have done it.
4:44 is brilliant!

I bet! Most unusual.
Forgetting the pin code was undoubtedly a ruse.
And now we know the motive: they wanted Elizabeth's inheritance.

Miss Sophie,
That ain't right.

Aber eben, jung, dumm und verliebt….. 😉

You said: "Opiasa also describes Annabel H.’s decision to withdraw support from Söring" - do we know why she decided to do so? Thanks.
There is an excellent podcast available: “Das System Söring“ in German and “The Soering System” in English that explains it all.
Thank you!
Ich empfehle einen kleinen Rundgang durch Bearas Social Media Auftritt. Das lohnt sich. Zumindest bei X. ;-) 😜
Der Lügenbaron ist für mich nicht aufrufbar?!

Kein Problem, nichts verpasst. War nur Folge Nr. 3'948'635 aus der nicht enden wollenden Reihe "Und so ticken Söring-Supporter". 😉
