In 2021, Jens Söring told the German newsweekly Der Spiegel that he wanted to lecture at a German law school. This is finally going to happen.
AFTER 33 YEARS IN PRISON: A CONVERSATION WITH JENS SÖRING
REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED
▪ Introduction by Prof. Milan Kuhli (University of Hamburg) and RA Stephan Grulert (BGB Rechtsanwälte)
▪ The interview will be conducted by Prof. Florian Jeßberger (Humboldt-Universität Berlin)
Jens Söring is a diplomat’s son and a German citizen. He was sentenced to two life sentences in the U.S. for double murder. Söring himself has denied responsibility for the crimes since the trial. After a total of 33 years in prison in the United Kingdom and the United States, Söring was released on parole in 2019 and deported to Germany. Söring is the author of several books, most recently his book "Rückkehr ins Leben - Mein erstes Jahr in Freiheit nach 33 Jahren Haft.”
Legally, Söring's case is particularly interesting because of a landmark decision by the European Court of Human Rights in 1990 and aspects of resocialization.
DATE: 19 MAY 2022
FROM 18.15 to 20.00
Lecture Hall ESA A
Needless to say, I have already contacted the law professors participating in this discussion to offer my services to put Söring’s claims into proper legal and factual context. That would make the event much more informative: instead of just hearing Söring’s claims, students would hear both sides of the argument.
I am hoping the organizers will take me up on my offer. It would be deeply unfortunate if Jens Söring were allowed to broadcast his claims without criticism or fact-checking, especially at the law faculty of a German public university. A law school is not the place for one-sided, inaccurate polemics. I am hoping the University of Hamburg will not choose this path.
I will of course post an update when I hear back from the organizers.
